Free Solo is easily one of my favorite films of the year. Directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi do an astonishingly remarkable job capturing one of the most mind-boggling feats of endurance in human history, Alex Honnold’s free-climbing of Yosemite’s El Capitan.
This documentary features phenomenal cinematography the likes of which I have never seen in a film, giving the audience an insanely intimate look into Honnold’s climb. The majestic score from Marco Beltrami heightened the larger-than-life themes of the narrative as well. Additionally, the top-notch editing from supervisor Tom Eisenhardt
ensured a beautiful flow to this magnificent story.
Although I definitely carry some baggage as an endurance athlete myself, I still believe Free Solo to be one of 2018’s greatest films overall, not just confined to the category of documentary.
