If you want a vivid, vibrant, terrifying, and trippy psychological sci-fi thriller, you need to watch Annihilation, from director and screenwriter Alex Garland, based on the novel written by Jeff VanderMeer.
A slowly-creeping apocalyptic mass of energy is threatening the fate of the world, requiring teams of military and scientists to investigate the mysterious phenomenon.
This film will make a lot of people ask introspective, thought-provoking questions of themselves. What are our strengths, and what is our fatal flaw? What are our reasons for living? What serves as the motivation behind our actions each and every day? There is so much mind-blowing symbolism within this narrative that will undoubtedly require a rewatch.
Of course it is absolutely stunning from a visual and cinematographic perspective, thanks to Director of Photography Rob Hardy and the crew of special effects wizards, but the deep themes relating to humanity and life as a whole will take your breath away as well.
The stellar sound design and the strikingly unsettling score from composers Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury tie this psychoactive tale together.
With excellent performances from stars including Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, and Benedict Wong, Annihilation is available on Blu-Ray and streaming on Amazon Prime today.
